Loss has hit my heart.
No wonder my emotions can be overwhelming.
My feelings can be so intense.

When loss strikes, emotions pour out everywhere.

Shock, sadness, anger, fear, anxiety, guilt, and depression well-up inside. These feelings can be so strong that they can hijack us in an instant. Our feelings can begin to dominate our lives.

Sometimes, we don’t even know what we’re feeling. Our emotions seem all jumbled together. The sheer force of grief emotions can be staggering.

Feeling overwhelmed is often the result. We spin. We become exhausted. We might feel emotionally paralyzed. Numbness frequently follows.

In Psalm 38, David wrote about a difficult time in his life. Many grieving hearts can relate to his words:

I am feeble and crushed;
I groan because of the tumult of my heart.
O Lord, all my longing is before you;
my sighing is not hidden from you (Psalm 38:8-9, ESV)

We can feel weak. It can seem as if we’ve been crushed. We groan. Our hearts are in an uproar.

We’re missing someone special. We long to see them. We yearn to hear their voices. Many of us sigh frequently.

The Lord knows all this. David cried out to Him. Our heavenly Father is with us. He sees us. He is listening.

We can pour out our emotions to Him. We can share with Him what we’re thinking and feeling. We can do this anywhere at any time.

If you have trusted Jesus Christ as your Savior, He lives in you. You are never alone. He can handle your emotions. He is never overwhelmed. Your sighing is not hidden from Him.

Grief is highly emotional. Your emotions may be overwhelming.

That’s okay. Accept yourself as you are in the moment. The Lord has you.

I am feeble and crushed;
I groan because of the tumult of my heart.
O Lord, all my longing is before you;
my sighing is not hidden from you.
(Psalm 38:8-9)

Heavenly Father, I sometimes feel overwhelmed.
You know this.
I might be overwhelmed, but You are not.
I choose to look to You, trust You, and rest in You today.
I embrace and receive Your love and
sustaining power for this day.
In Jesus’ name…

Affirmation: Even though my emotions are overwhelming, I will accept myself as I am and remember that the Lord is with me.
