People have asked me for more info about my upcoming book Walking with God Through Grief.
In response, I thought I would share with you a portion of the book’s introduction…
WHAT THIS BOOK IS ALL ABOUT
Loss is hard. The death of someone we love can be painful, traumatic, and even devastating.
Loss hits us on every level. It impacts our emotions, our minds, our bodies, our souls, our relationships, and our future.
Grief wells up within us. It can be intense, relentless, and overwhelming. Like ocean waves, grief just keeps coming.
How do we learn to walk with God through grief?
In the Bible, the word walk pops up again and again. Here are just a few examples:
For we walk by faith, not by sight. (2 Corinthians 5:7, ESV)
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10, ESV)
I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called. (Ephesians 4:1, ESV)
Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. (Ephesians 5:1-2, ESV)
Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise…(Ephesians 5:15, ESV).
Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him…(Colossians 2:6, ESV).
In these Scripture passages, the word walk refers to the ongoing, daily, moment-by-moment process of living life.
Daily life is a walk—a walk with God.
How do we walk with God while grieving?
That’s what this book is all about.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS BOOK
Before you get started, here are some things that might be helpful to
you as you read.
Walking with God Through Grief is a book of 90 devotionals. Each devotional is grounded in the Bible and designed to connect with your heart. These devotionals are brief – about 2-3 pages long.
WHO IS WALKING WITH GOD THROUGH GRIEF WRITTEN FOR?
This book was written for anyone grieving from all the loss and change in their lives following the death of someone special.
The goal of Walking with God Through Grief is to help grieving hearts cry out to God and walk with Him amid the pain and upheaval occurring in their lives.
WHO AM I TO WRITE A BOOK LIKE THIS?
I am a follower of Jesus Christ. I come from a background of heavy loss and sexual abuse. I came to Jesus when I was 11 years old.
Though I didn’t know it, everything changed in that moment.
As losses and wounds continued to pile up, God faithfully brought me through them one by one. He comforted, encouraged, and healed me, even though many times I was in so much pain I could not even sense His presence. At least four times in my life I have thought, “That’s it. I’m not going to make it through this.”
Obviously, I was wrong. God is faithful indeed.
In high school and college, my plan was to become a physician. God had other plans. I became a trained theologian with two seminary degrees. Over the past four decades I’ve had the privilege of serving Jesus as a church-planting missionary in Japan, a pastor of several churches in Texas and Washington, a hospice chaplain, and a grief counselor. I now serve as a pastor, author, and grief specialist.
I hope you find Walking with God Through Grief helpful, encouraging, comforting, and healing. I have prayed for you in advance. As you read, I pray that You will hear God speaking to you. He speaks through what He has spoken. As we engage with Him in His Word and in prayer, I believe we heal and grow.
Join me as we walk with God through grief…
