When the Grief Journey Seems Dark

Sometimes, the grief road can seem very dark.

The following is a chapter from Soul Cry: Devotional Prayers for Wounded, Grieving, and Suffering Hearts. If things seem dark to you, I pray this will be an encouragement and comfort to you today.

It Feels Dark Here

John 8:12

Heavenly Father, Lord of the universe,
blessed are You, Sovereign King.
I bow before You, Almighty One,
I receive from You life and love this day.

I try to focus on You, Lord,
but my wavering, scattered brain wanders.
The grief within me churns.
One emotion climbs over another in
a frantic attempt to escape.

Help me, O Father.
Have mercy on me, today.

“I am the light of the world.
Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness,
but will have the light of life.”

It feels dark here, Lord Jesus.
Yet You are the light.
You are always shining,
and darkness flees before the light.
I am Yours, Jesus.

I follow You, though not as I ought.
I trust You, but very imperfectly.
Keep me following You, empower me.

“I am the light of the world.
Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness,
but will have the light of life.”

I just realized this is not a command,
but rather a promise.
If I follow You,
I will not walk in darkness.

Things may feel dark indeed,
but I do not live in that darkness.
I live in You, the light.
I walk in the light, not in the darkness.

“I am the light of the world.
Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness,
but will have the light of life.”

Not only will I never walk in darkness,
but I have You – the light of life.
You, Jesus, live in me –
Savior, Lord, eternal life, light of the world.

I may think and feel many things.

I give all thoughts and emotions to You.
You know them all, You know me.
Shine in and through me today.

You are the light of the world, Jesus.
I follow You.
I will never walk in darkness.
I have You, the light of life.
